To mark the upcoming release of Carte Blanche, the new James Bond book by top American thriller writer Jeffery Deaver, publisher Hodder & Stoughton has teamed up with Bentley Motors to create an exclusive Bentley special edition. It’s the ultimate luxury edition of the hotly awaited new James Bond adventure. The 500 limited edition copies are now available for pre-order. While the world’s best-known fictional secret agent James Bond is seen behind the wheels of Aston Martins and BMWs on the silver screen, his transport of choice in books has been a Bentley.

In Carte Blanche, our super agent will be driving the beautifully sculpted and sophisticated new Bentley Continental GT. The design team at Bentley has worked closely with Hodder & Stoughton to capture the spirit of Bond and Bentley. From the proposals submitted by a team of seven designers, the final design came from Bentley Senior Designer Brett Boydell. Brett Boydell said…

As a designer it doesn’t get much better than a brief of ‘Carte Blanche’! The design features radical concepts that we feel reflect the name of the book, the ideas inherent in the Bond legacy, and the design principles we are passionate about.

Each copy of the special edition Carte Blanche is custom made to Bentley’s demanding standards and comes inside a stunning metal case. And each copy of the luxurious limited edition of the new James Bond book will set you back a cool £1,000 (about $1,650).

The case of the Bentley special edition draws inspiration from the deserts of Dubai. Earlier, Jeffery Deaver was spotted in Dubai with the new Bentley Continental GT in white over red, outside the InterContinental Hotel in Dubai Festival City. Jeffery Deaver examined the vehicle on his recent visit to the Emirates, and he said…

I’m really excited about being back in Dubai. It is an inspirational and awe-inspiring city and makes a perfect Bond location – especially for a novel that pushes our hero to new extremes.

An automotive supplier was hired to create the high-end case to Bentley’s high standards, using a specially commissioned machine. The book is done in white Nappa leather, the same grade of leather we find inside the Bentley GT. The title, author’s name and the wings of the Bentley logo can be seen on the front and the spine. The text is printed in two colors – black and red – on ivory paper, with endpapers of a matching red leather. The book is placed elegantly on a base of black anodized aluminum.

Another highlight of the design is a die-cut bullet hole that goes through the pages of the book. The pages conceal a single polished 9mm bullet, that has been individually marked with a number.

The highly anticipated Carte Blanche will be released on May 26, 2011.
