The short answer is: The Anunnaki were the deity pantheon of the ancient Sumerians. And interest in the Sumerian culture has been active and persistent since it was discovered in the 19th century \u2014 for several reasons.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Who were the Sumerians?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Sumerians appear on the archaeological record beginning around 4,500 BCE. Located in present-day Iraq, the region, a.k.a. Mesopotamia has long been referred to as \u201cthe cradle of civilization.\u201d Sumer was a handful of city-states initially ruled by priests, each organized around a city and temple now called \u00a0a \u201c<i>ziggurat.<\/i>\u201d The ziggurats, dedicated to Anunnaki worship, were layered pyramids with flat tops. These communities were considered to be \u201cservant-slave\u201d populations dedicated to serving the temple gods, the Anunnaki. Over time, priesthood rulership gave way to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/sumerian-kings-list-and-annunaki-oaths\">kings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Sumerians were skilled trade merchants and acquired lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, cedar from Lebanon, and gold from the Indus Valley. Reportedly, some half-million tablets have been recovered, but only a small number have been translated. Much was also learned from translations of Babylonian records; Sumer was considered \u201cancient\u201d in Babylonian times.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"layer layer--2 blocks    layer-show\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div id=\"\" class=\"block col-lg-12 offset-lg-0 \">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sumerians worshiped the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/gods-eden?fullplayer=feature\">Anunnaki<\/a>, said to be the children of earth and sky; An, the sky god, and Ki, the earth goddess. Chief among them was Enlil, the god of air. This pantheon was passed to the Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian cultures.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/searching-garden-eden\">The Epic of Gilgamesh<\/a>, the story of the historical king of Sumerian city-state Urek, is an ancient literary relic of Sumerian culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Above is the mainstream \u201cnarrative\u201d regarding the Anunnaki \u2014 others have drawn different conclusions based on archaeological evidence, analysis of Sumerian mythology, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/sumeriantabletsf00bedauoft\/sumeriantabletsf00bedauoft_djvu.txt\">translations<\/a>\u00a0of cuneiform tablets.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>The Flipside of the Annunaki Story<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/forbidden-archeology-michael-cremo\">Michael Cremo<\/a>\u00a0(\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Forbidden-Archaeology-Michael-Cremo-ebook\/dp\/B004LE7OHI\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1534788127&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Michael+cremo\">Forbidden Archaeology<\/a>\u201d) has researched the history of archaeology for 40-plus years, documenting findings that have been excluded from mainstream, academic archaeology; findings that would disrupt the widely accepted story of human origins.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/trueblog.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/anunnaki-and-igigi.jpg\" alt=\"The Most Fascinating Two Groups In Ancient Text That Baffled ...\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Cremo, along with author Zecharia Sitchin,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/series\/erich-von-daeniken-beyond-legend\">Erich von D\u00e4niken<\/a>\u00a0(author, \u201cChariots of the Gods\u201d), author and researcher Michael Tellinger, and several others, makes compelling arguments that the Anunnaki were, in fact, off-world beings posing as \u201cgods.\u201d This theory also asserts that these \u201csky\u201d gods genetically engineered the human race a slave species, which may account for weak links in the evolutionary story. These theories gave birth to the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/civilization-planet-x-jason-martell?fullplayer=feature\">ancient astronaut<\/a>\u201d hypothesis asserting that off-world beings have been posing as gods to influence human affairs for millennia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Many believe that the Annunaki extracted massive amounts of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/power-gold?fullplayer=feature\">gold<\/a>\u00a0using human labor \u2014 this is derived from multiple discoveries of ancient mining tunnels in South Africa, as well as relics and links to the Sumerians. \u201cNo one knows why they wanted gold, no one knows how much was taken,\u201d said Tellinger. He added that the Annunaki introduced the concepts of money, finance, and debt to human societies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A theory that these beings originated from \u201cNibiru,\u201d a.k.a. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/civilization-planet-x-jason-martell\">Planet X<\/a>\u201d has been added to alternate Anunnaki narratives, as well as the likelihood of the off-world gods bringing advanced technologies that account for sophisticated megastructures such as the pyramids or Stonehenge.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/out-place-artifacts-anomalies?fullplayer=feature\">Out-of-place<\/a>\u00a0artifacts and tool discoveries contribute to these premises.\u00a0The Sumerians are also known for sophisticated astronomical and mathematical knowledge, speculated to have passed from the Annunaki.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21080\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21080\" src=\"https:\/\/marketing.gaia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/enki.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21080\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-21080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Annunaki god Enki<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">While no lists of the Annunaki pantheon exist, it is known that each Sumerian city-state had its own Annunaki god\/overseer assigned by senior Annunaki Marduk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Some, perhaps inspired by Theosophical Society founder Helena\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaia.com\/video\/madame-blavatsky-spiritual-traveler\">Blavatsky\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0book \u201cThe Secret Doctrine,\u201d assert that the Annunaki are\/were a reptilian race that survives to this day, deeply entrenched in human affairs. On the surface, the Anunnaki\/Reptilian narrative appears to be a completely unbelievable hypothesis.
